I visited Stand in Budapest for my first Michelin-star dining experience. While I’ve been to many upscale restaurants before, I came in with high expectations—and left somewhat disappointed. To start with the positives: this is undeniably a high-class establishment. The space is elegant and well-designed, the materials and presentation are top-tier, and the service is attentive and professional throughout. The experience is long and immersive (around three hours), and many of the dishes were indeed very good—flavorful, refined, and thoughtfully presented. However, several aspects significantly detracted from the experience. First, the portions are very small. Arriving hungry is a mistake—you simply won’t feel satisfied unless you rely heavily on the bread (which, to be fair, was excellent). Still, it felt wrong to be filled by bread in a Michelin-star restaurant. Second, the meal builds a strong sense of anticipation that never quite pays off. Each dish feels like a prelude to something greater—interesting, well-crafted, but not quite “the star.” This creates an expectation that keeps rising throughout the evening. Unfortunately, the supposed highlight—the Beef Wellington for two—did not deliver. It felt underwhelming relative to the buildup. Third, pricing felt excessive in ways that are hard to justify. I understand paying a premium for creativity and craftsmanship, but charging heavily for basic items like sparkling water, or 8000 HUF for fairly standard cocktails, feels unreasonable. Fourth, when a guest asks for tap water, it should be respected without repeated questioning. Being asked multiple times was unnecessary and mildly frustrating. Fifth, not all dishes met the standard. Some were left untouched, yet no replacement or acknowledgment was offered. The homemade pasta, in particular, was disappointing. Finally, the menu structure itself is frustrating. The chef’s menu already costs 89,500 HUF, yet many selections come with additional charges of up to 10,000 HUF per dish. This creates a sense of nickel-and-diming during what should be a seamless experience. A single, all-inclusive price (even slightly higher) would feel far more appropriate and aligned with the level of the restaurant. Overall, while Stand delivers on atmosphere, service, and technical execution, the experience feels uneven and, at times, unnecessarily frustrating. For a Michelin-star restaurant, I expected a more cohesive, satisfying, and thoughtfully designed experience.
Amazing Gastronomical experience at this fine dining establishment! We had the tasting Menu, accompanied with a few pairings of local wines, one of them was an amazing sweet Tokaj Wine 🎯 The food was outstanding and also the Service 💯 as you can expect it was quite expensive but you get a unique travel that includes very interesting variations on Hungarian cuisine, Must try dish is the Beef Wellington.
We visited Stand as a group of eight and unfortunately left quite disappointed. One of us has a strict dairy-free requirement, as well as lactose-free. The booking was made through our hotel, so we understand there may have been some miscommunication, but this really should have been clarified at the start of the meal. Instead, one course was simply skipped without any explanation, and we were still charged the full menu price. We only realised something was missing and had to ask about it ourselves, which felt quite awkward. Even if a dish can’t be adapted, it should at least be communicated clearly, or an alternative offered. There were also issues with how things were communicated. For example, we came specifically hoping to try the signature apple dessert, but it was replaced without any explanation. Only later were we told that for groups of four or more, a different dessert is served by default unless requested. This was never mentioned to us at any point. Service overall felt quite rigid and not very attentive. It wasn’t unfriendly, but there was little effort to guide us through the menu or explain decisions, and some basic fine dining details were missing. As for the food, the presentation was beautiful, but at least three dishes were noticeably too salty, which affected the overall experience. Overall, it just didn’t feel like the level of care and attention we would expect from a two-star restaurant, especially when it comes to communication and handling dietary requirements.
Quite possibly the best meal of my life. The chef’s menu was a culinary delight. You have to get the wine pairing as it elevates the food so much. I bought 4 bottles of Tokaji wine to bring home after trying it with our food at Stand. If you want a beautiful memory you must dine here! Thank you so much!
Experience Hungarian tasting menu at Strand Etterem Budapest ✨ In Budapest, Strand is known as a quintessential, fine dining with 2-Michelin stars Hungarian dining destination, where guests embark on a complete culinary journey — from Hungarian seasonal ingredients to refined service. 🌸 Ambience & Service Artistry The space reflects the spirit of fine dininv: minimalist and elegant, yet warm and intimate. The staff are very professional and dedicated. Cuisine: The highlight of the Chef's menu lies in the combination between traditional Hungarian meals and international foods, paired with truffle, caviar, and more. The sequence of dishes is thoughtfully arranged: light and fresh at the beginning, rich and bold in the middle, then finishing with refined balance through dessert. ❤️ My two favorite dishes: Wagyu beef soup and Beef Wellington in Hungarian style. Dessert & Aftertaste: The journey concludes with a variety of desserts. I love the Apple but not apple. 😅😂. ⭐ Highly recommended in Budapest!
