Safari / Nature Tours in Budapest

If you think Budapest is all about grand buildings and thermal baths, think again. Just outside the city, there's a surprising amount of green space and wildlife to check out. I’m talking about areas like the Óbuda–Hármashatárhegy zone, where you can join easy nature walks that sometimes reveal deer grazing quietly or spotting birds you wouldn't expect in an urban area.

One of my favorite spots for a nature fix is the Danube-Ipoly National Park, easily accessible by public transport or a quick drive. There are guided tours that take you through forest trails, alongside riverbanks, and sometimes even arrange for a glimpse of wild boars (don’t worry, they usually stay clear of people). What’s nice is you can visit year-round; spring brings wildflowers and fresh greenery, while autumn turns everything golden and crisp.

If a traditional safari sounds too far-fetched here, consider the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, which blends natural habitats for native species with an impressive collection from abroad. It’s more than just animals behind fences – they maintain large areas where local wildlife has space to roam naturally.

Here’s a tip: If you want to see more birds, head to the Kopaszi Dam area in the early morning. It’s a quiet spot right on the Danube loved by local birdwatchers. Bring binoculars, and maybe some coffee from a nearby café. Doesn’t feel like the city at all.
