Hiking & Trekking in Budapest

If you're in Budapest and itching to stretch your legs beyond the pavement, the Buda Hills have plenty to offer. Forget what you might think about this city,there's more green than grey if you know where to look. My favorite quick escape is Normafa, especially in spring when the chestnut trees bloom. The trails aren’t hardcore mountain climbs, but they’ll give your legs a good workout and your lungs some fresh air.

Some routes take you past old castle ruins and through dense forests, others offer sweeping views over Pest and the Danube. Take the Libegő chairlift if you want to save some energy and still enjoy a lovely panorama from above. And don’t overpack,water and a snack are usually all you need. Pro tip: Head out early on weekends if you want to avoid the crowd near János Hill, the highest point in Budapest.

In winter, you might catch snow and less foot traffic, which makes for a peaceful trek. Whatever season you pick, Budapest’s hiking spots are a neat reminder there’s more to the city than the famous baths and ruin bars.
