Cycling in Budapest

If you’re into cycling, Budapest is surprisingly great for it once you know where to go. The Danube riverside bike paths are a no-brainer, especially around Margaret Island where cars don’t exist and the air feels fresher. I love starting near Margaret Bridge and riding north along the river,there’s this cool mix of city views and peaceful green patches that catches you off guard.

But don’t just stick to the obvious. The City Park (Városliget) has quiet alleys and wide paths where locals often practice their skills or just go for a relaxed spin. Early mornings there can be magic before the café crowds show up. Pro tip: rent an e-bike from one of the many spots near Deák Ferenc tér; it’ll save your legs if you want to tackle some hills in Buda, like the climb up Gellért Hill for a killer panorama.

Try to avoid weekends on the main riverside paths if you want to dodge families and tourists, but early spring or late autumn rides along the Danube? Pure joy. Oh, and keep an eye out for the little bike kiosks around town – they’re super handy if you get a flat or need a quick tune-up.
