Dinner at Gundel was an experience I will never forget! Everything was perfect from the very beginning. We were amazed by the beautiful dining room and our elegantly prepared table. The service was warm, professional and attentive. A little later, live musicians started playing, making the atmosphere even more special. The food was outstanding – beautifully presented, full of flavor, and a wonderful introduction to traditional Hungarian cuisine. The most unforgettable dish was the famous Gundel pancake, served with flaming rum. The wine pairing was excellent, with each wine perfectly matched to the food. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is quite expensive, but the quality and the whole experience are absolutely worth the price. Our dinner for two, including the wine pairing and a few extra dishes, cost almost 100,000 HUF, and we left with memories we will treasure for a long time.
Incredible! I would highly recommend visiting here at least once if you are travelling to Budapest. Although on the pricier side, the food, drinks, service and atmosphere were all excellent. They also have live music playing where the musicians will come around and play songs from your country. This was a very lovely touch.
An Absolutely Flawless Experience at Restaurant Gundel. If I could give Restaurant Gundel more than five stars, I would! From the moment we walked through the doors, we were completely blown away by the gorgeous, five-star interior design, and the warm, inviting five-star atmosphere. It perfectly sets the stage for an unforgettable meal. The beverage selection is absolutely phenomenal. We started off with their lemonade, which was perfectly balanced, fresh, and incredibly refreshing. Later, we moved on to a stunning glass of wine, that was recommended to us and paired flawlessly with our dinner. As for the food, the entrées were nothing short of spectacular. Everything was beautifully plated, cooked to absolute perfection, and bursting with flavor. You can really tell the chefs put a lot of passion and attention to detail into their craft. Just when we thought the evening couldn't get any better, it was time for the sweets. The desserts were truly excellent, decadent without being overly heavy. I highly recommend ordering a cappuccino, that little chocolate/ginger/cinnamon/powdered sugar cookie complements the coffee. It was rich, wonderfully frothy, and the exact right way to end such a magnificent dining experience. Restaurant Gundale has completely mastered the art of fine dining, ambiance, and top-tier hospitality. I cannot recommend this place enough and will absolutely be returning!
A place to try traditional Hungarian specialties in a lovely atmosphere. Enjoy the food and the live music provided. The violinist is great. Try a two or three course meal and enjoy wine or beverage of your choice. You’ll feel like relaxed and full. We did.
Gundel We read about Gundel before traveling to Budapest. We were intrigued that it had been around for over 130 years, so we had to try it out. We were not disappointed. Opened in 1894 and renamed Gundel in 1910, Karoly Gundel revolutionized Hungarian cuisine by combining Hungarian flavors with French cooking. The result made Gundel’s known throughout Europe. In 1939, at the New York World’s Fair, Hungary’s restaurant pavilion, run by Gundel, became a hit with Americans as well. The food, atmosphere, and location were all superb, “hospitality with elegance, and a mastery of Hungarian gastronomy.” I was traveling with my wife and our friend from New York, and the family sharing meal sounded perfect. It was. We started with Gundel’s fabulous signature Gin & Tonic, house-made bread, and a fresh, crispy salad. The next course was an enormous tureen of forest mushroom soup and another bread from the kitchen. The main course consisted of two fried chickens, cut and perfectly cooked, with side dishes of mashed potatoes, boiled buttered potatoes, rice, cherries, fried zucchini, and mushrooms. I’m sure I’ve forgotten something. Dessert choices were brought to the table. We had tiramisù, Rakoczi Cheesecake (a cheesecake with apricot coulis and meringue), and two other Hungarian specialties that were scrumptious. The staff worked in perfect concert with each other, bringing the courses at a steady pace for a leisurely, relaxed lunch. The bonus was a four-piece orchestra performing exquisite music, creating an ‘old world’ atmosphere. When in Budapest, Gundel’s is a must.
