Rumour was one of the culinary highlights of our Budapest trip. The restaurant leans hard into the speakeasy theme, and they have a lot of fun with it without it feeling gimmicky. More importantly, the food absolutely delivers. I’d put it right on par with many Michelin one-star restaurants I’ve visited. Every course was beautifully presented, creative, and, most importantly, delicious. Come hungry because this is a serious tasting menu. The bread and butter service alone is worth getting excited about. We chose the local Hungarian wine pairing. It was good, but not great. I’d give it a solid B. I’ve had better curated local pairings elsewhere, and a few of the wines didn’t elevate the dishes as much as I expected. Service, however, was outstanding. Friendly, polished, and attentive without feeling overly formal. My only real disappointment was the chef’s counter. If you’ve done true counter dining before, adjust your expectations. You’re seated far enough back that you don’t really get the immersive “watch the chefs at work” experience. It felt more like regular seating with a view than an actual chef’s counter, and that was a bit of a letdown. Overall, I’d absolutely recommend Rumour and would happily return. Just know what you’re signing up for. Go for the exceptional food and the playful experience, not because you’re expecting an intimate chef’s table. If that’s your mindset, I think you’ll leave very happy. Food: 4.5/5 Service: 4.7/5 Wine Pairing: 3.8/5 Chef’s Counter Experience: 3.5/5 Overall: 4.0/5
Was it worth a detour? Without a doubt, this is a destination. One of those experiences you plan a trip around. What about the food? Next level. Every dish feels intentional, creative, and beautifully executed. The salmon tartare? Unreal. The burnt cauliflower? Perfectly balanced. And the bacon ice cream… unexpected and addictive, litteralt pops in your mouth! This isn’t just dinner it’s storytelling through food, and with parts of the menu changing every other week, it keeps things exciting. How was the service? Seamless. Attentive down to the smallest detail without ever feeling over the top. Everything just flows, from allergy checks to pacing, like a perfectly choreographed experience. What’s the venue like? Low-key, almost hidden entrance very speakeasy energy. But once you’re in, it’s a full-on stage where the kitchen takes the spotlight. Having Rácz Jenő present and serve dishes adds that extra layer of authenticity and humility. Anything that could be better? I got one plate served that was missing a sauce, I noticed, let the staff know, they quickly fixed the error. Other than that - Nothing. This is one of those rare places where everything just clicks.
The food and wine selection were excellent, and the atmosphere and service were great. The wine pairing price was clear from the beginning, but the aperitif served at the start was priced separately. It would be better if all pricing was communicated clearly upfront, as discussing prices during the meal can feel a bit uncomfortable. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
@aDJinZurich Goes Fine Dining Rumour. Chef’s Table. Front row to the theatre of flavours. Watching this menu unfold course by course felt like reading poetry — but tasting it was another story entirely. Korean “Nudli” with Jerusalem artichoke & generous Périgord truffle shavings — silky, earthy, unapologetically indulgent. “50 Shades of Beetroot” — vibrant, playful, layered with just the right amount of intrigue. That pre-dessert of French toast, dried tomato, pineapple & saffron ice cream? Unexpected harmony only a fearless chef could orchestrate. And then… the honey butter with a hint of chilli. Simple on paper. Life-changing on the palate. Proof that sometimes the quietest item on the menu makes the loudest statement.
