Description

Enjoy a full-day tour of the Baranya region of southwest Hungary on a 12-hour sightseeing excursion from Budapest, and see picturesque cities, historic castles and the forested slopes of the Mecsek mountains. Go to the historic city of Pécs to see remnants of the Ottoman rule. Highlights of your visit include the 4th-century Christian necropolis, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city center Gazi Kasim Mosque. Admire the Romanesque Cathedral, and learn about the Hungarian painter Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry at the Csontváry Musuem. See traditional Zsolnay porcelain at the Zsolnay Museum. Continue to Siklós, home to one of the best-preserved palaces in Hungary. Siklós Castle was first mentioned in a charter dating back to 1190, but as subsequent owners rebuilt the castle several times, it shows characteristics of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Next, tour the Villány to Siklós wine route, connecting 11 villages of a protected wine-growing area. One of the sunniest wine districts in Hungary, the sub-Mediterranean climate produces grapes suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Blue Portuguese, Blue Franc and Merlot wines. Go to the village of Villány to taste ruby reds reminiscent of Médoc wines, and the white wines of Nagyharsány, with flavors of Rhine-ish Rieslings, Chardonnays and Tramines.
