Description
Spend the day exploring Eger, known for its castle, thermal baths, Turkish minaret, and baroque architecture. The town is surrounded by the Bükk Hills of the Northern Uplands and is famous for the production of the Egri Bikavér, or Bull’s Blood wine.
The tour includes a visit to the 19th-century neoclassical Cathedral and the Lyceum, which houses a 20,000 volume library and the Specula and Planetary Museum. You will also see the baroque Minorite Church and the wrought iron gate of Fazola at County. Optionally, visit Eger Castle, built in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion, located at the top of cobblestone streets in Dózsa György tér. Entrance to the castle allows you to view historic statues and paintings.
The Minaret of Eger, built in the 16th century, is the northernmost Islamic building in Europe and has withstood demolition attempts due to its strong construction.
Optionally, continue to Egerszalók at the foothills of the Bükk Hills to relax at a spa where two thermal springs emerge as geysers. The medicinal waters are used for treating circulatory and muscular ailments including arteriosclerosis, rheumatic disease, bile, and stomach problems.
