Description

Discover the cultural side of Pest by following Budapest's transformation from the great 19th-century capital to the contemporary city. This tour in Italian combines famous monuments, history, art, and intriguing details that often go unnoticed by those strolling down Andrássy Avenue. Meet your guide in front of the Opera House and learn how the prestigious Andrássy Avenue came into being. Then soak up the atmosphere of Nagymező utca, the street of theaters: see the actors' footprints on the sidewalk and learn about the history of Géza Hofi, one of Hungary's most beloved comedians. Admire the elegant Mai Manó House, one of the iconic sites of Hungarian photography, and learn about the history of Robert Capa, who was born in Budapest and became one of the most famous photojournalists of the 20th century. The route continues among the palaces of the imperial city to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where you will learn about the life and legacy of the great Hungarian composer. In front of the House of Terror, listen to the story of the dictatorships that marked Hungary in the 20th century and discover the contrast between the elegant façade of Andrássy Avenue and the city's most painful events. A short walk will take us to Heroes' Square. Learn about the figures depicted in the monument and see the Museum of Fine Arts before entering Városliget, the city's large park. Stroll around the romantic Vajdahunyad Castle. Conclude the route in the most contemporary area, where the House of Music and the Ethnographic Museum showcase Budapest's new architectural face and where, next to the 1956 monument, we will look for a surprising mini-statue by the artist Kolodko.
