Description
The tour begins at Bem József Square, where visitors see a 1960s coffeehouse with its original interior. From there, travel by metro to Kossuth Square to view monuments marking the political unrest of 1956 in front of Parliament.
Walk to Freedom Square to see four stone structures reflecting Cold War tensions: the U.S. embassy, a Soviet army monument, a statue of President Ronald Reagan, and an entrance to a secret atomic shelter.
Take the metro to a 1970s housing estate. Although now plain in appearance, these apartments once represented modern conveniences and new opportunities for Hungarian families.
Visit the former People’s Stadium (now Puskas Soccer Stadium) to find Socialist Realist statues depicting heroic workers, soldiers, and intellectuals.
Ride a Stalin-era trolley bus to Dozsa György Street, a major parade boulevard. Your guide will show historic photos on an iPad contrasting past and present Budapest.
Nearby is the House of Terror museum, housed in the former secret services headquarters, commemorating communist-era crimes. A slab of the Berlin Wall is displayed outside.
