Description
Budapest’s seventh district was one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities before World War Two and remains Hungary’s center of Jewish life. By the early 18th century, this neighborhood became a diverse cultural and religious melting pot. During the war, a ghetto was established here, where many Jews survived.
This tour highlights the district’s history and culture with an emphasis on Jewish-Hungarian cuisine. You will learn about the neighborhood’s past, including the destruction of historic buildings, and visit its four synagogues, which remain important to Budapest’s Jewish community.
The tour also covers the district’s modern aspects, such as murals, street art, design shops, and cafés. The culinary focus includes tastings of Hungarian-Jewish specialties like sausages, matzo ball soup, gefilte fish, Jewish eggs, cholent, roasted goose, and flódni. Expect to leave both full and informed about Hungary’s Jewish heritage.
