Description
The tour starts at The Central Market Hall, one of Europe’s largest indoor markets, then continues through the Ferencváros neighborhood, the Palace Quarter, and the Újlipótváros area. These neighborhoods feature historic buildings, cafés, parks, and local shops.
The route includes a visit to a second market hall favored by local chefs and customers. Here you will discover Hungarian cuisine through a wide range of ingredients, and learn about the buildings, shopping habits, and food culture of Budapest residents.
Throughout the market aisles, you will taste selected foods while your guide shares insights into Hungary’s culinary traditions, ingredients like pork, goose fat, paprika, and goose liver, and how they are used in traditional dishes.
The tour visits specialty shops selling local cheese, honey, chocolate, and paprika; small buffets with fresh lángos and sausages; family-run pastry shops offering local cakes such as Dobos torta and Pozsonyi kifli; a strudel shop highlighting Hungarian variants; a farm-owned eatery at the market; and a restaurant serving traditional soups like gulyás or matzo ball soup.
Drinks served include coffee, spritzer (fröccs), and Unicum, Hungary’s signature bitter liquor. A sommelier-led wine tasting at The Tasting Table features three wines including Tokaj sweet wine, paired with cheese, and offers expert context on Hungarian wine regions and styles.
The tour includes a tram ride along a route beside the Danube, offering views of Buda Castle, the parliament building, and other UNESCO World Heritage sights.
