As a tourist for the first time in Budapest, we went for the bath kind of last minute and it was so good. I would recommend it. Not too many people (visited on Thursday afternoon). The Turkish baths were amazing and had a really nice atmosphere. The only thing is that few things were under repair and the jacuzzi was not working properly. Otherwise we had a really great time.
If you are looking for an authentic thermal experience in Budapest without the overwhelming crowds of Széchenyi or Gellért, Irgalmasok Veli Bej is the city’s ultimate hidden gem. This beautifully restored 16th-century Ottoman bath is tucked away inside the Budai Irgalmasrendi hospital building, giving it a peaceful, local atmosphere that feels like a well-kept secret. Why It Is Special? The highlight is undoubtedly the central octagonal pool sitting beneath a stunning ancient cupola. Because the facility limits entry to only 80 people at a time, it never feels overcrowded, allowing you to truly soak in the history and the 36°C healing waters in near silence. You’ll also find four smaller thermal pools at different temperatures, a swimming pool, and a modern wellness area with Finnish and infra saunas. Prices (2026) : • Morning Discount (Wed–Fri, 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM): 5,700 HUF (~€16.00). • Standard Weekday Afternoon (Mon–Thu): 6,700 HUF (~€18.75). • Weekend & Friday Afternoon: 7,200 HUF (~€20.15). • Overstay Fee: 40 HUF per minute.
While visiting Budapest for the weekend, I wanted to go to a spa, but one that would not be crowded. After reading reviews, I opted for Veli Bej and visited at 6am on a Sunday. It was very quiet, with several pools empty and only about 10 people in the space. There were two steam rooms, one infrared sauna, and one regular sauna. There were also about three baths or small pools for relaxing, one jacuzzi, plus a large pool where you could properly swim. I paid 7,200 HUF per person, around £17 or €20. Entry lasts a maximum of three hours. Two hours was enough for me. It was starting to get busier by the time I left, around 8.30am, but it was still quiet, with about 20 people in the space. I had read that weekend evenings can be busy, so I would recommend going early in the morning. Almost everyone there was a retired Hungarian local, so this place did not feel touristy at all. Tips: • Bring soap or shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner, as none of the showers have them. • Bring a swimsuit, as naked bathing is not allowed, and flip flops. • Be careful walking around, as the floors were wet and slippery in places.
It is a real hidden jam! What a Turkish Bath in Budapest! They have 3 hour tickets which is perfect and spots are limited to 80 people at a time. We went in the afternoon shift (3-9pm) and arrived around 2:50pm and we were about the 40th in the line. There is no way to book in advance so show up a little early will get you in.
A great hammam built in 1575 and beautifully renovated. It was given to private hands some time ago hence a hospital being built around it but all you see is the stunning hammam when you step in. There are multiple entrances that lead to the hammam from the Danube River side. There is a seperate entrance via the cafe entrance and you can also get there via the hospital entrance. You can buy tickets via the bath reception only and not on line, one of the better entry price tickets in Budapest. They also limit entry to about 80 people at a time and you’ll need to wait until people exit but you can call reception to check entry numbers ahead of time if needed beforehand. It’s a smaller hammam that Rudas and the minerals in the water are slightly different but still soothing. There are 4 other different temp pools in the main hammam to cool down if needed and a lap pool and jacuzzi separately on another floor. The saunas are in a separate corridor of the hammam but very small taking two people only at a time. It’s very clean place and the renovation makes the almost 600 year old bathhouse a dream to visit. We slept very well that night!
