Description

The beautiful Matthias Church in the old town of Buda has over 750 years of history behind it: the former small parish church of the Germans living in Buda became a magnificent Gothic cathedral under King Matthias Corvinus, which served as a mosque during the Ottoman period. For several hundred years, it was a simple baroque church, which was transformed into a beautiful neo-Gothic church for Hungary's millennium celebrations. Don't forget: it was also used as a coronation church for the last two Habsburg rulers, Franz Joseph and Karl. During the tour, you'll get a brief overview of the building's history and then see all the important parts of the church from the inside: the main nave, the small side chapels, the tomb of a Hungarian royal couple, the honorary lodge of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, and the exhibition in the roof truss. The tour guide will not only tell you important facts, but also many interesting and curious stories and legends that make the Matthias Church experience even more versatile. Since the guide buys the admission tickets (included in the price) in advance, you won't have to wait in line at the ticket office during this visit. After the tour, you're welcome to stay in St. Matthias Church to see everything again or to take photos/videos.
