Definitely a tourist trap, but still a very cool place and worth visiting for the eclectic decor alone. We stopped by on a weekday afternoon with our kids and were warmly welcomed into the quirky world of Szimpla Kert. The boys even left their mark on the wall before we grabbed a few drinks and soaked up the atmosphere. The upstairs food area was fairly quiet, although not the easiest to reach with a stroller, so we settled into the garden instead. There was live music, plenty of interesting corners to explore, and a really fun vibe. My only small gripe was working out which of the three bars served what. One had cherry beer but no lemonade, another had cocktails but no beer, so I ended up queuing at two different bars to get everything for the table. Prices are about what you’d expect for one of Budapest’s most famous spots. I can only imagine how packed it gets on a weekend, so I was glad we visited on a weekday afternoon. I’d definitely recommend checking it
Great to pop in for the atmosphere. Lots of little places to find a seat to have a drink and soak up the surroundings of this eclectic bar. Go for the experience . Went on a weekday night so although busy I think it would be packed at the weekend
The atmosphere is truly magical and unlike anything else. Find yourself a cozy spot, sit back, and simply enjoy the experience. There is live music from time to time, which adds even more charm to this unique venue. Every corner is so interesting and full of character that you’ll probably want to take photos of everything. The street food options are also delicious. It’s a fantastic place to relax, soak in the atmosphere, and spend a memorable evening.
Was it worth a detour? 100% this is a must if you’re in Budapest. One of those places you just have to experience at least once. What about the drinks/food? It’s more about the vibe than anything else, but solid options to grab a drink and just hang out. How was the service? No complaints, pretty standard for a busy bar like this. What’s the venue like? Super unique ruin bar with a slightly psychedelic, artsy vibe. Tons of details everywhere, you can walk around and keep discovering new things. It’s both indoor and outdoor, so dress for the weather. Anything that could be better? It can get crowded, but that’s also part of the experience.
I went to Szimpla Kert and yeah, it totally lives up to the hype—it’s one of those places that actually feels as cool as people say. The whole ruin bar concept is just wild if you’ve never seen it before. It’s basically this old, slightly crumbling building turned into a bar, but in a really creative way. Every room feels different—random furniture, graffiti, weird decorations hanging from the ceiling… it’s kind of chaotic, but in a fun way. I went pretty early, so it wasn’t packed yet, which honestly made it even better. I could actually walk around, check out all the different rooms, and take it all in without constantly bumping into people. I can imagine it gets super crowded later at night though. Drinks are reasonably priced for such a famous spot, and the atmosphere is what you’re really there for anyway. It’s a great place to start the night or just hang out and soak in something a bit different. Overall, yeah—it’s touristy, but still feels unique enough to be worth it. If you’re in Budapest and want to experience the ruin bar scene, this is definitely the place to go at least once.
